Breanna Greteman successfully defended and graduated with her PhD in Epidemiology, Spring 2024. Breanna will start a postdoctoral position with Dr. Nash working primarily on work related to weight (stigma) and cancer treatment. Congratulations Dr. Greteman!

Sarah and Co-PI Mary Schroeder (UIowa College of Pharmacy) were awarded a HCCC Pilot Award from the Iowa Cancer and Obesity Initiative for their project titled Developing a natural language processing tool to identify weight-based stigma and understand differences in cancer treatment-related decision making among Iowa breast cancer patients.

Morgan won a 2023 College of Public Health Research Week Award for her poster titled Diet and Health Behaviors Associated with Osteoarthritis Knee Pain During the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (MOST). She also won the same award in 2022! Morgan is pictured here with her co-mentor, Jim Torner (2022).

Erin (right) and Jamie (left) were both selected to present oral presentations at the HCCC Research Retreat 2023. Jamie presented on Understanding Discrepancies in the Reporting of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Variables to the Iowa Cancer Registry. Erin presented on Clinical trial discussion, and participation among cancer survivors: A SEER-HINTS study; Erin was also the winner of a Travel Award for her talk!

Ashley Williams (UIowa MPH '23) and Sarah were interviewed for a story in InSight Magazine sharing the power of stories and sharing their work talking to African American Iowans to understand how racism impacts cancer prevention and control behaviours.

Identifying predictors of COVID-related delays in cancer-specific medical care
This study used data from the University of Iowa Comprehensive Cancer Center's Patients Enhancing Research Collaborations at Holden (PERCH) program to examine factors predicting delated medical care among Iowans seen at the University of Iowa for their cancer care during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patient perspectives of weight stigma across the cancer continuum: a scoping review
This study, conducted in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Southern Alabama and the University of Arizona, examined existing qualitative literature on patient experiences of weight stigma across the cancer continuum, from screening, through treatment and survirorship care.

This study, conducted as part of Dr. Emma Herbach's dissertation research, provides important information to understand how access to diagnosis, staging, and treatment for breast cancer contributes to cancer inequities observed by race and ethnicity.

This study, conducted in collaborators from across the CPCRN, provides an introduction to the CPCRN health equity toolkit, including guidance on how to operationalize the health equity principles, examples of practices applied within the CPCRN, and a curated list of relevant resources.

This study, led by Dr. Nash, examined survival from leading cancers among American Indian and Alaska Native people, and compared survival using different metrics. Results indicated that choice of metric could be important for disparities work for this population.

This study, led by collaborators at the American Cancer society, presented recent cancer statistics for AIAN people across the US, with a specific focus on early onset CRC. It was designed as a companion manuscript to the 2022 ACS Facts and Figures Special Section, which focused on cancer among AIAN people.
